Sam Roi Yod & Secret Cave

Sam Roi Yod National Park:“Three Hundred Peaks” (Sam Roi Yod) is a fascinating area of limestone mountains, caves, beaches, islands and marshy wetlands that is home to a great variety of plants, birds and some endangered animals. Between September and November, hundreds of migratory shore birds from Siberia, China, and Northern Europe arrive at the mudflats to feed and rest, before continuing their southern journey.

The park between Kuiburi and Pranburi, some 35km to 70km (22mi to 44mi) north of the town of Prachuap Khiri Khan, has an area of 61,300 rai (about 9,808 hectares, 24,520 acres) The geographical and geological make-up of the park is high limestone mountains, a wide prairie near the seashore as well as off-shore islands. The park, designated on June 28, 1966, has a wide variety of plant species and is home to many wild animals.

We leave Hua Hin for Sam Roi Yod at 9 am and the 60-minutes drive south to Thailand’s first national park takes you through pineapple plantations and Bang Pu fishing village.

We proceed by a local fishing boat to a secluded beach, which is the starting point to a 30-minute trek up to Phrayanakorn Cave. There you will find the beautiful ‘sala’ (throne) erected by King Rama V and have the opportunity to explore the cave. There are a couple of natural ventilation holes in the roof of the cave thus allowing sun light to enter. At the cave is Phra Thinang Khuha Kharuhat, a four-gable roofed pavilion constructed during the reign of King Chulachomklao (King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, reigned 1868-1910) in 1890. The pavilion is now used as official symbol of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

We return to the beach for lunch in a local restaurant and relax before heading back to your hotel.

Sam Roi Yod National Park is reportedly one of the best locations in Thailand to observe shorebirds.
